Hi, I'm michelle

Lady Kat’s Bio

Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in the heart of cattle country and in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Lady Kat was always inspired by nature.
Her talent for art was evident when she was given the freedom to make rainbow coloured elephants and to veer off from colouring inside the lines. She commissioned her first piece at the age of 23 to the dean of a local college who saw her work emulating nature.

At the age of 52 she picked up the brushes again after her partner suffered a stroke and she felt she needed an emotionally creative outlet. But, as with everything in her life she wanted it to have a purpose, so she enrolled in the Milan Art Institute and learned how to create art that sold. She enlisted in their Mastery program and only months into it got people’s attention and started shipping pieces out to the world. She now has pieces hanging in Germany, McGill University in Montreal, and all over Canada.

Being torn between two very distinct styles, Michelle loves to paint brightly coloured oil painting in a directional marking style that has become all her own. It is already very distinctive and allows her to stand out in a show. Her other style of abstract realism done in multimedia and finished with oils. All her pieces truly capture the energy and movement of nature and still have it feel like it’s there with you in the room. As she says, “As you can see, EVERYthing I do is fun with a twist of serious or Serious with a twist of fun. Either way EVERYthing I do is twisted somehow, like my sense of humour.” And, it’s true. You cannot walk past a piece without smiling, at least on the inside.

Lady Kat’s home and studio overlook the Bow River Valley and the Rocky Mountains. With breath taking views, she teases that she’s in a human zoo with the moose, coyotes and deer walking outside the fence perusing the captive humans inside. She’s currently working on a Western themed series expounding on the heritage of the Cowboy lifestyle of Cattle Country in the Rocky Mountains. She also plans to do a series to capture her travel adventures in Europe and those she’s had from around the world. With her unique style and talent, we have no doubt that her genius will help us see the world with new eyes.

Lady Kat’s Way

I’m still at the point where I look at, well, anything really and I want to paint it. I think about it and watch it, the direction it moves, when it looks most powerful or intriguing, and then where it’s fur moves or the way the wind moves around it. Almost like aerodynamics, but also I’m looking for swirls or the cowlicks; those interesting pieces that catch your eye. And, when it comes to putting paint to canvas, it’s thinking about the symbolism of the brush stroke and what emotions certain shapes and movements evoke. And, then, of course, there’s the colours. The receding cools and the approaching warms. In the end, they all come together to make us happy.
